Bay Area biofuels developers that produce alternatives to gasoline are studying how to replace petroleum in other products.
Companies such as Genencor International Inc., Solazyme, Zeachem Inc. and Redwood City-based Codexis Inc. are steering their discoveries to markets like plastics, solvents, generic drugs and other industries. These moves will allow them to diversify their product offerings and provide marketing, environmental and pricing advantages to companies that haven't had alternatives to petroleum-based products in the past.
