April 14, 2008 (Motor Trend) — With gas headed for $3.60 a gallon and politicians worried about America's dependence on foreign oil, many are looking to ethanol as the fuel of the future. The only thing is, currently even with federal subsidies the cost of making fuel from corn isn't very competitive, especially since E85 fuel gets you fewer miles per gallon than traditional gasoline. Many companies are working on the cost issue, and GM has even invested in Coskata Inc., a Chicago firm researching cellulosic ethanol. However now a new energy startup called ZeaChem claims to have solved the problem, and that they can now make ethanol at a competitive price.
