ZeaChem Selected as One of the “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” by Biofuels Digest
Lakewood, CO — December 22, 2008 — ZeaChem Inc., a developer of biorefineries that convert biomass into fuel and biochemicals, announced that it has been chosen as one of the “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” by Biofuels Digest, the most widely read biofuels daily publication in the world. ZeaChem was chosen by a Biofuels Digest panel that evaluated companies based on their importance of research or production achievements recorded in 2008.
“ZeaChem has established a technology path for cellulosic ethanol that has attracted a lot of positive buzz. The path is thoroughly innovative but also relentlessly practical,” said Jim Lane, editor of Biofuels Digest and chairman of the American Biofuels Council. ZeaChem was ranked 11th out of more than 2,000 eligible bioenergy companies.
ZeaChem and other companies on Biofuels Digest’s list of “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” will be honored at an award presentation in Washington, D.C., on April 20, 2009, in conjunction with the Advanced Biofuels Development Summit.
Based in Colorado, ZeaChem’s cellulose-based biorefinery platform is capable of producing a broad portfolio of fuel and biochemicals including ethanol. Using “third generation” cellulosic ethanol production technology, ZeaChem can use any kind of biomass, including hybrid poplars, to make ethanol. The result is a high-quality, low-cost process with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry.
“As we continue on track to break ground on our first biorefinery in 2009, we value this recognition of ZeaChem’s high-yield, low-carbon ethanol manufacturing process,” said ZeaChem’s CEO and President, James Imbler.

About ZeaChem Inc.
ZeaChem Inc. has developed a cellulose-based biorefinery platform capable of producing thirdgeneration ethanol fuel and intermediate chemicals. ZeaChem’s indirect approach leapfrogs the yield and carbon dioxide (CO2) problems associated with traditional and cellulosic based ethanol processes. In addition, ZeaChem has a significant capital cost advantage compared to other cellulosic ethanol technologies. By efficiently extracting the most energy possible from biomass feedstocks, ZeaChem significantly increases output while reducing both production costs and environmental impacts. Incorporated in 2002, ZeaChem is headquartered in Lakewood, Colo., and operates a research and development laboratory facility in Menlo Park, Calif.
